35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference on 23 November 2017

1.0 The 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference cum 40th Anniversary Celebration of MAJECA and JAMECA was successfully convened on 23 November 2017 at the Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The theme was “MAJECA and JAMECA – Beyond 40 Years and into the Next Decade”.

3.0 Malaysia hopes to achieve high income nation status and Vision 2020 by year 2020.  Beyond 2020, Malaysia is also looking into a National Transformation Plan 2020 to 2050 known as TN50.  Malaysia is also a vibrant part of ASEAN and the ASEAN Economic community.  The next step is the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which includes Japan in the ASEAN+3+3 framework.

Japan is aiming for “Regional Revitalization” in order to overcome population decline and to revitalise the local economy in Japan.

The 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference discussed trends and opportunities  for the next decade whilst reviewing its achievements in the last 40 years.

4.0 Keynote Address by YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia

YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia delivered the Keynote Address and officiated the Opening of the 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference

The Honorary Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia acknowledged that MAJECA had been pivotal in promoting closer economic relations between the private sectors of Malaysia and Japan, and greatly instrumental for the substantial flow of investments from Japan into Malaysia.  Malaysian Government is committed to build deeper economic ties with Japan through collaborations with JETRO-MIDA-MATRADE via seminars, roundtable meetings with SME Industries, business matching  programmes and business missions.  Projects implemented under the LEP 2.0 have yielded commendable outcomes across multiple sectors.

H.E. Dr Miyagawa in his Special Address recognized that there were many opportunities  for Malaysia and Japan to collaborate.  This included the robust infrastructure development in Malaysia, Islamic Market Development, opportunities for collatorations and interactions between Japan and Malaysia in the digital economy, development of SMEs as supporting industries to the Japanese MNC, amongst others.

An overview of the market for Halal goods and services:

■ 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide (3 billion 2060).
■ HALAL market USD2.3 trillion (USD3.7 trillion 2019).
■ Increasing demands from non-Muslims countries.
■ HALAL  tourism spending – USD200 billion by 2020.
■ HALAL Cosmetics –USD73 billion by 2019.
■ HALAL Pharmaceuticals – USD370 billion by 2021.
■ HALAL – One of the fastest growing segment in e-commerce

5.0 YBhg Tan Sri Azman Hashim, in his closing speech, reiterated that there were many new areas of co-operation that can be explored and built upon between the members of MAJECA and JAMECA.  The digital era has enabled current businesses to have new channels and platforms to reach customers on a global scale.  Boldness was needed to embrace these changes.  The President welcomed mutually beneficial collaborations between Malaysian and Japanese businesses with new innovations and technology expertise in order to better compete in the global arena.  The Japanese companies were also encouraged to use Malaysia as their base.

The President also encouraged JAMECA to work alongside MAJECA to raise the profile of the Joint Conferences to be a key annual event for Industry leaders and players to meet and collaborate and to spur new business collaborations between our private sectors.

6.0 MAJECA hosted a dinner for participants of the 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Tan Sri Azman Hashim, President of MAJECA delivered the Opening Speech at the dinner.  In his speech, Tan Sri Azman expressed MAJECA’s thanks and appreciation to Mr Mikio Sasaki, Co-Chairman and President of JAMECA, Mr Kazuo Ohmori, Vice President of JAMECA, Mr Hidekazu Oshita, Secretary-General of JAMECA, all distinguished Speakers from Japan and Malaysia, all sponsors for the Joint Conference, participants from Japan and Malaysia and MAJECA and JAMECA Secretariat staff who assisted to make the conference a success.

7.0 The 36th JAMECA-MAJECA Joint Conference will be held in Japan in 2018.
