MAJECA President, Tan Sri Azman Hashim and Vice-Presidents, Dato’ Md Taib Abdul Hamid and Datuk Seri Mohamed Iqbal hosted a farewell lunch for H.E. Dr. Makio Miyagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia on 24 October 2019.

H.E. Dr. Makio Miyagawa had an illustrious five and-a-half year term as Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia. During his term, there were many high-level exchanges and visits that have kept Malaysia-Japan relationships on a firm footing. Japan remains no. 1 foreign investor in Malaysia. Inspite of the global economic slowdown and geopolitical tensions, Malaysia-Japan business relations continued to grow as new sectors and industries open-up possibilities arising from Industry 4.0. This was especially given a boost when Tun Dr. Mahathir returned as Prime Minister in 2018. The rejuvenation of the Look East Policy brought Malaysia-Japan ties to new heights, as evidenced through the establishment of a Japanese University branch campus in Kuala Lumpur, Japanese assistance through the issuance of yen – demoninated bonds, collaboration in the areas of transportation modes and in the defence fields, amongst others.

MAJECA extends its warmest greetings and best wishes to H.E. Dr. Makio Miyagawa on his successful tour of duty in Malaysia.

Meeting with Kansai Economonic Federation (KANKEIREN) on 20 September 2019

KANKEIREN officials from the International Affairs Dept. visited MAJECA on 20 September 2019. They were Mr Toru Nagatsu, General Manager and Mr Yasumasa Nakanishi, Senior Officer, Asia Business Creation Platform Office.

Their visit to Malaysia was to meet with economic organisations to inform and promote KANKEIREN’s new platform, i.e. Asia Business Creation Platform (ABC Platform).

This platform enables KANKEIREN to work together with economic organisations in Asian countries and Kansai region to provide opportunities for business creation.

The Asian member organisations are currently the following:-

• Indonesia – Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Malaysia   – National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM)
• Myanmar – The Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry
• Philippine – Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Singapore – Singapore Manufacturing Federation
• Thailand – The Federation of Thai Industries
• Vietnam   – Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Japan     – Kansai Economic Federation (KANKEIREN)

ABC Platform country leaders will gather once a year to determine action plans, sharing of achievement and challenges.

5 working groups have been created , each with a Japanese organisation as Project Manager. These include:-

• HR Development/Utiilization – Ehle Institute
• Medical / Nursing Care – SOMPO Holdings
• SME – Resona Bank
• Agriculture – Kubota
• Tourism – Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA)

NCCIM has proposed to ABC Platform to organise a seminar in Kansai region to promote the Concept of Halal to Japanese SME enterprises involved in the Food & Food processing sector. This is planned for October 2019.

President of MAJECA, Tan Sri Azman Hashim hosted a working lunch for H.E. Dr. Makio Miyagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia and top officials from The Japanese Chamber of Trade & Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on 17 September 2019.

The luncheon was held in the spirit of broadening the dialogue and communications channels, building closer rapport and improving institutional relationship.

There was general consensus that there was a need to intensify dialogue with/from all angles. MAJECA offered to be a conduit to assist, facilitate and expedite the entry process of Japanese investments into Malaysia.

JACTIM and JETRO offered their services to work closer with MAJECA on issues where our respective objectives align.

Given the swift changes in the business arena resulting from the advancement of the internet enabled technologies, and digitalisation all parties agreed that there was an urgency to invite and enlist the younger generation with the new-age skill sets and businesses to come on board MAJECA.

There are also increasing trends of Malaysian investments into Japan and MAJECA is keen to welcome these into its membership.

MAJECA is grateful to H.E. Ambassador of Japan and top officials from JACTIM and JETRO for making time to have lunch with MAJECA’s President and senior Executive members.

Mr Katsuhiko Ushiba, Director, Business Platform Office for Asia, International Affairs Department, Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren), Japan visited Kuala Lumpur. The purpose of his visit was to introduce Kankeiren’s new initiative called the “Business Platform for Asia” with the aim to stimulate business interchange, create business opportunities and to promote technical collaborations between the participating countries.

36th JAMECA-MAJECA Joint Conference on 6 November 2018 in Tokyo, Japan

JAMECA hosted the 36th JAMECA-MAJECA Joint Conference on 6 November 2018 at the Tokyo Prince Hotel, Japan. JETRO was a co-organiser of this event.

There were approximately 600 participants, with 82 Malaysian participants. The Guest-of-Honour was YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The Malaysian Prime Minister was accompanied by Malaysian Ambassador to Japan, H.E. 44th ASEAN Japan Business Meeting (AJBM) in Bali, Indonesia on 25 October 2018

The 44th ASEAN Japan Business Meeting (AJBM) was successfully held at the Hilton Bali Resort, Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia on 25 October 2018. The theme of the conference was “Connectivity and Digital Economy to spur growth in Asean region and Japan”. The Japanese side was led by Mr Shinya Katanozaka, Co-Chairman of the 44th AJBM, concurrently CEO of All Nippon Airways Ltd. The Chairman and Co-Chairman of the 44th AJBM was Mr Kusumo Martorejo.

Opening Ceremony

• The Vice Governor of Bali, Dr Ir. Tjok Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, MSi presided and gave a speech at the Opening Ceremony.

• Speeches from the following dignitaries were read and noted at the Opening Ceremony.

-H.E. Dr Rachmat Gobel, Indonesia Presidents’ Special Envoy to Japan and a former trade Minister which was read by Mr Kusomo Martorejo.

1.0 The 43rd ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting (AJBM) was held on 22nd to 24th November 2017 at the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. The theme for this meeting was “Deepening ASEAN-Japan Economic Partnership Through Promotion of Tourism and Related Industries”.

AJBM Malaysia was represented by YBhg Dato’ Che Mohd Annuar Che Mohd Senawi, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Idaman Unggul Berhad and EXCO Member and Treasurer MAJECA. YBhg Dato’ moderated Plenary Session 2: Healthcare and Other Potential Opportunities of Tourism Strategy as well as Roundtable 2: Tourism + MICE + Other Industries and Rapporteur for the Wrap Up and Summary Session.

1.0 The 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference cum 40th Anniversary Celebration of MAJECA and JAMECA was successfully convened on 23 November 2017 at the Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme was “MAJECA and JAMECA – Beyond 40 Years and into the Next Decade”.

3.0 Malaysia hopes to achieve high income nation status and Vision 2020 by year 2020. Beyond 2020, Malaysia is also looking into a National Transformation Plan 2020 to 2050 known as TN50. Malaysia is also a vibrant part of ASEAN and the ASEAN Economic community. The next step is the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which includes Japan in the ASEAN+3+3 framework.

Japan is aiming for “Regional Revitalization” in order to overcome population decline and to revitalise the local economy in Japan.

The 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference discussed trends and opportunities for the next decade whilst reviewing its achievements in the last 40 years.

4.0 Keynote Address by YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia

YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia delivered the Keynote Address and officiated the Opening of the 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference

The Honorary Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry (Trade), Malaysia acknowledged that MAJECA had been pivotal in promoting closer economic relations between the private sectors of Malaysia and Japan, and greatly instrumental for the substantial flow of investments from Japan into Malaysia. Malaysian Government is committed to build deeper economic ties with Japan through collaborations with JETRO-MIDA-MATRADE via seminars, roundtable meetings with SME Industries, business matching programmes and business missions. Projects implemented under the LEP 2.0 have yielded commendable outcomes across multiple sectors.

H.E. Dr Miyagawa in his Special Address recognized that there were many opportunities for Malaysia and Japan to collaborate. This included the robust infrastructure development in Malaysia, Islamic Market Development, opportunities for collatorations and interactions between Japan and Malaysia in the digital economy, development of SMEs as supporting industries to the Japanese MNC, amongst others.

5.0 YBhg Tan Sri Azman Hashim, in his closing speech, reiterated that there were many new areas of co-operation that can be explored and built upon between the members of MAJECA and JAMECA. The digital era has enabled current businesses to have new channels and platforms to reach customers on a global scale. Boldness was needed to embrace these changes. The President welcomed mutually beneficial collaborations between Malaysian and Japanese businesses with new innovations and technology expertise in order to better compete in the global arena. The Japanese companies were also encouraged to use Malaysia as their base.

The President also encouraged JAMECA to work alongside MAJECA to raise the profile of the Joint Conferences to be a key annual event for Industry leaders and players to meet and collaborate and to spur new business collaborations between our private sectors.

4.0 The Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Hon. Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was the Guest-of-Honour. In his keynote speech, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the following:

a) He acknowledged the roles of MAJECA and JAMECA that had spearheaded the bilateral economic and business relations between the two countries since their inception in 1977.

b) The bilateral relationship has been greatly enhanced through the Look East Policy (LEP) 2.0, building upon the foundation of human capital development as well as to achieve more technology transfers, effective collaborations in R&D and successful business joint-ventures.

c) In the regional fora, Malaysia and Japan are both members of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) as well as working closely on new and enhanced economic agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

d) In 2015, Japan was Malaysia’s fourth largest trading partner with total trade valued at USD32.77 billion (RM127.4 billion).

e) Japan continued to be among Malaysia’s largest source of FDI in the manufacturing sector with a total of 3,362 manufacturing projects with Japanese interests with total investments of USD32.9 billion approved as at December 2015 in sectors such as electronics and electrical products, non-metallic mineral products, basic metal products, petroleum products including petrochemicals, chemical and chemical products and transport equipment.

f) Collaboration initiatives were undertaken, example JETRO organised the “Japan-Malaysia Invest Symposium” in Kuala Lumpur on 15 March 2016. Another seminar on “Doing Business in Japan” will be organised by MITI, JETRO, MATRADE and MIDA on 14 June 2016.

g) Japan will host the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Malaysian businesses, particularly those in the Halal Food Industry, were encouraged to capitalize on this major event to increase Malaysia’s business presence in Japan.

h) Japanese businesses were encouraged to use Malaysia as a gateway to the ASEAN market to take advantage of the ASEAN Community that came into force in January 2016.

He said that Japanese companies investing in Malaysia look at the country from three different angles: innovation and enhancement of Malaysian industry, expectations on TPP and halal hub, and labour issues.

On the TPP, JACTIM hoped for further deregulations, such as to allow the participation of Japanese convenience stores into the domestic market which they think will help to modernize and revitalize small Malaysian retail businesses.

In respect of the promotion of Malaysia as a Halal Hub and a gateway to the Islamic world, JACTIM said that the Japanese food industry can offer detailed, fine-tuned production control know-how which has been strictly applied to ensure high level of food safety and believed that such expertise can satisfy the stringent standards of halal management. By attracting investment by the Japanese food industry in this area would ensure a win-win situation. Japan is collaborating with JAKIM, the certification authority of Malaysia, and the Japan Halal Association and the Japan Muslim Association have been recognised as certification organization by JAKIM. This would augur well for Malaysia’s food industry sector in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 when Japan would welcome Muslim guests.

10.0 During the Closing Ceremony, Tan Sri Azman Hashim, President of MAJECA, issued an invitation to JAMECA to attend the 35th MAJECA-JAMECA Joint Conference that will be held in Malaysia in 2017. The 35th Joint Conference is significant as MAJECA celebrates its 40th Anniversary of MAJECA-JAMECA relations that began on 8th November 1977, marking an important milestone and achievement for both the Associations.

13.0 MAJECA and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Kuala Lumpur organised a visit to JETRO Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC) office at Ark Mori Building, Tokyo. Mr Fujihara Masaki, Director of Invest Japan Support Division, Invest Japan Department, JETRO Headquarters welcome and briefed the MAJECA and JETRO delegates on JETRO’s Invest Japan Programme and IBSC. The delegates also toured the IBSC facilities after the meeting.
